This gently buzzing lounge-style cafe-restaurant is set behind palms. The predominantly Western menu has lots of coffee drinks (imagine that), quesadillas, Russian salad, pasta, steak and some imaginative sauce flavours such as lime-caper-butter, spicy raisin-orange or garlic-mint. Marie Min

An all-vegetarian menu fits the owners' stated principle: ‘Be kind to animals by not eating them’. The food largely references Sri Lanka, India and Myanmar; highlights include tofu curry, a meal-sized aubergine 'dip', and avocado milkshakes (K2000) that are as 'fabulous' as promised. Very popular with backpackers. It's off 27th St, between 74th and 75th Sts.

Super 81

Excellent, beautifully presented Chinese food in very generous portions, plus typical barbecues and cheap draught beer in frosted glasses. Downstairs is a convivial beer station but prices are the same upstairs in the pleasantly appointed air-con restaurant. Handy place if you're waiting for a Moustache Brothers performance.
